Learning the Basics
To start playing Family Meld Pinochle, you'll need a standard deck of 48 cards, without jokers. The deck consists of 9s, 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings, and Aces, with two cards of each rank. The objective of the game is to score points by forming valid combinations of cards. Here are the basic rules to get you started:- Each player is dealt 12 cards, and the remaining cards are placed face down in a draw pile.
- The top card from the draw pile is turned over and placed beside it, face up. This card sets the trump suit for the game.
- Players take turns drawing cards from the draw pile or picking up the top card from the discard pile.
- A player can form valid combinations of cards, such as runs, flushes, and melds, to score points.
Understanding Card Combinations
- Runs: A run consists of three or more cards of the same suit in sequential order (e.g., 3-4-5 of hearts). Runs are worth 25 points each.
- Flushes: A flush consists of three or more cards of the same suit (e.g., 3-5-7 of diamonds). Flushes are worth 30 points each.
- Melds: A meld consists of three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., 3-3-3-3 of hearts). Melds are worth 50 points each.
- Chances: Chances are cards that can be used to form valid combinations. They are worth 5 points each.
